'Metallic Magic'
Design Theme - Study of the shimmering stitched surfaces of Opus Anglicanum and shi-sha mirrors.

Module 2

Module 2 takes you through the first historical and ‘other cultures’ study - specifically at Opus Anglicannum, the exquisite medieval ecclesiastical ‘English’ embroidery and the rich exuberantly decorated textiles from countries like India using metal threads and other glittering items such as shi-sha mirrors. This study will discover different uses of metallic threads and other shiny non ’thread’ materials, learning fresh ideas for your contemporary study of embroidery and design. Both the embroidery methods and the designing ideas will then be taken forwards into a more contemporary sphere, where parallels will be drawn using our modern equipment and materials - all of which the embroiderers of the historical study period and different countries would have embraced had they been available to them at the time. The design work based on figure and face within this Module will be used to initiate the metallics assessment piece, a design idea already started in Module 1 or from Chapters in Module 2.
